Moldova next in line to join ATA chain
The Republic of Moldova will become the 67th country to join the ATA Carnet system as of 1 July 2010. With a modest recovery predicted for the Moldova economy in 2010, the move will help facilitate trade and open new business opportunities with the country.
The Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Moldova has been approved as the national guaranteeing and issuing organization.
“ATA Carnets are a useful tool to aid efforts to attract investment and identify new markets,” said Peter Bishop, Chair of the WCF World ATA Carnet Council that monitors ATA operations. “Joining the system can help countries such as Moldova boost their export markets.”
Managed jointly by WCF and the World Customs Organization, the ATA Carnet system permits the duty-free and tax-free temporary import of goods for up to one year. From commercial samples to goods for use at trade events, Carnets account for billions of US dollars in goods every year.
The World ATA Carnet Council works to expand the number of countries who are members of the ATA chain. Prior to Moldova, Montenegro was the last country to join in 2008. Mexico, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the United Arab Emirates are all expected to join in the near future.
