ICC takes Global Goals Week down under to Sydney
Global Goals Week takes place from 18-24 September during the opening of the United Nations General Assembly in New York City. But 10,000 miles away in Sydney, Australia, the 10th World Chambers Congress is making sure that participants get to be part of the Global Goals Week action too.
The 17 Global Goals adopted by 193 world leaders in 2015, are a shared vision to end extreme poverty, inequality and the worst threats of climate change by 2030.
As an official Global Goals Week partner event, the Congress – co-organised by the International Chamber of Commerce, the World Chambers Federation and the Sydney Business Chamber, a division of the NSW Business Chamber – will provide its expected 1,200 participants with opportunities to learn more about the goals and demonstrate commitment to accelerating their attainment.
“As the world business organization, ICC believes the ‘SDGs’ should also be known as the ‘BDGs’: the Business Development Goals,” ICC Secretary General John Danilovich said.
It is estimated that achieving the Sustainable Development Goals would open up US$12 trillion of market opportunities in sectors such as food, energy, health and cities, and many companies are already recognising the big efficiency gains, innovation and reputation enhancement that come from being socially and environmentally responsible.
In his Congress Opening Ceremony address, ICC First Vice-Chair and Corrs Chambers Westgarth Partner and CEO John W.H. Denton AO will call on business and chamber leaders to show support for the goals and help ensure that businesses worldwide are doing all they can —in their daily operations and investments—to drive their implementation.
Featuring discussions on issues including sustainability, workplace diversity and access to finance, and highlighting chamber innovation in areas such as job creation and business development, the Congress facilitates exchange on real-world challenges, promoting best practices for positive change and development at grassroots level. Congress participants are invited to demonstrate personal commitment to the Global Goals at the ICC WCF exhibition booth. Results of this on-site photo shoot will feature on social media channels throughout the event and on Twitter via the #GlobalGoals hashtag.
New South Wales Premier Gladys Berejiklian will officially open the 10th World Chambers Congress which takes place in Sydney, Australia from 19-21 September.
