ICC yesterday took part in a meeting of Mexican officials from government and industry, kicking off preparations for the next B20 Business Summit, to be held in conjunction with the G20 Summit in Los Cabos, Mexico, 18-19 June 2012.

The launch meeting was led by Jose Antonio Meade, Minister of Finance, Bruno Ferrari, Minister of Economy, and Alejandro Ramirez, CEO of Cinepolis, who has been designated by President Felipe Calderon to coordinate the B20 Summit.

ICC Secretary General Jean-Guy Carrier, representing global business, was joined by leaders from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and Mexican business associations COPARMEX and COMCE to coordinate the integration of business viewpoints and recommendations into the process.

The Mexican government invited ICC to play a leading role in preparations for Los Cabos, based on its history of advocacy work with the G8 and contributions to the B20 Summits in Seoul and Cannes. ICC will evaluate the impacts of business recommendations on Summit declarations, coordinate policy working groups and conduct consultations with businesses worldwide.

ICC, working with the assistance of ICC Mexico, and under the leadership of the ICC G20 Advisory Group, is mobilizing its global network to provide business views on key issues on the G20 agenda such as trade and investment, financial regulation, anti-corruption, employment, communications technologies and green growth. CEOs from the ICC G20 Advisory Group will take part in the various working groups being convened ahead of the B20 Summit.

“The G20’s agenda impacts business priorities for growth and employment and warrants our engagement and the contribution of business recommendations,” said ICC Secretary General Jean-Guy Carrier. “We aim to help Mexico build on the progress achieved in Seoul and Cannes.”

Trade and investment will remain a high priority on the business agenda and ICC was encouraged by the Cannes declaration to engage on the opportunities of the multilateral trading system in a globalized economy.

“Significant steps were made in Cannes and we are confident that a robust follow-up in Los Cabos can set changes in motion that will positively impact areas such as jobs and growth,” Mr Carrier said. “Shifting the rules of global trading in particular would empower business to foster economic recovery.”
