Promoting sustainable use and conservation of biodiversity through open exchange of Digital Sequence Information
Joint statement by public and private sector organisations, academic and scientific institutions, data repositories and collections
This statement – co-signed by ICC in collaboration with a large number of other public and private sector organisations, academic and scientific institutions, data repositories and collections – explains the benefits of the open exchange of digital sequence information in science and research for countries at all levels of development.
It also expresses concerns that imposing access and benefit sharing obligations on access to and use of digital sequence information could hinder research that contributes to the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the sustainable development goals by supporting conservation and fostering research into technological solutions to tackle societal challenges.
Finally, the statement proposes recommendations to be taken by the CBD on this issue.
