ICC launches selection process for next ICC Court President
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has launched the process to select the next President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, for the 2027–2030 term.
The ICC World Council is expected to elect the next President by 30 June 2027 when current President Claudia Salomon completes her second and final term. The next President will take office along with the renewal of the ICC Court, with part of its membership also set to change for a new mandate beginning in July 2027.
ICC is committed to safeguarding the independence and integrity of the ICC Court and to conducting the selection of the next President through a fair, rigorous and transparent process. As in the previous presidential selection process, an independent selection committee will assess candidates and make a recommendation through ICC’s governance bodies.
The selection committee is composed of highly esteemed individuals and practitioners from a diverse range of jurisdictions. It is chaired by Justin D’Agostino and comprises Juan Fernández-Armesto, Yas Banifatemi, Chiann Bao, Rebecca Enonchong, Eduardo Damião Gonçalves and ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO.
The selection committee has been entrusted with identifying, assessing and interviewing suitably qualified candidates and submitting a reasoned recommendation to the Nominations and Human Resources Committee of the ICC Executive Board. The ICC Executive Board will subsequently decide which candidate to recommend to the ICC World Council for appointment.
Applications will be accepted from 2 November to 31 December 2026.
Eligible applications will first be assessed against the approved profile and candidate criteria, before moving through a formal shortlisting process, followed by final interviews and deliberations. The selection committee is expected to submit its recommendation for review by mid-March 2027, ahead of consideration by the ICC Executive Board in early April 2027 and appointment by the ICC World Council in June 2027.
John W.H Denton AO, Secretary General of ICC said:
The President of the ICC Court has a unique responsibility: to uphold the Court’s independence and integrity while providing leadership to an institution serving businesses and arbitration users across the world. We have put in place a process designed to identify an outstanding successor for Claudia Salomon. As her presidency approaches its conclusion, we recognise her important contribution to the ICC Court and its continued development as a global arbitral institution.
Justin D’Agostino, Vice-Chair of ICC said:
The selection committee recognises the significance of this appointment for ICC and for the international dispute resolution community. We encourage outstanding candidates from across the world to put themselves forward. We will conduct a rigorous, independent and fair process, assessing candidates against the approved criteria.
Claudia Salomon, President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration said:
The role of President of the ICC Court is a job of a lifetime. It requires intellectual rigour, global engagement and leadership and a willingness to navigate complex issues. I would encourage those who have a demonstrated commitment to shaping the future of international dispute resolution to consider applying and I trust that the selection committee members will ensure a fair and transparent process in selecting the next president who can steer the world’s leading arbitral institution to its new chapter.
