Jointly organized by the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) and the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the annual Conference on International Construction Contracts and Dispute Resolution will return to Istanbul on 29-30 March 2016.

With the Yavuz Sultan Selim Bridge and the Eurasia Tunnel currently underway at the Bosphorus and a number of gas pipeline projects in progress throughout the country, Istanbul is a natural choice for this year’s conference venue.

In 2014, the region accounted for 27% of ICC’s construction cases. “Lawyers and engineers from different backgrounds and cultures often approach construction contracts and related disputes in different ways. This top-level conference on construction and dispute resolution in Istanbul will explore and debate these differences and have presentations on best contract practices and optimal solutions to current construction problems and disputes. This conference is part of the continuing effort of the ICC and FIDIC to promote better construction and more efficient dispute resolution around the world,” said Christopher Seppala ,Co-chair of the event, Partner, White & Case LLP, France; FIDIC’s Observer, ICC International Court of Arbitration; Member, ICC Institute of World Business Law; Legal Advisor, FIDIC Contracts Committee, FIDIC.

The last time the city hosted the two-day event was in 2009 and was an immense success bringing together over 200 internationally renowned engineers, construction arbitration specialists and in-house lawyers from all over the world.

Topics addressed during the event will include:

  • Issues with the use of FIDIC Contracts in Turkey and the Middle East; Claims and Dispute Resolution Procedures under FIDIC Contracts
  • Benefits of using Dispute Boards in international projects
  • Settlement of construction disputes and related problems
  • Jurisdictional issues with respect to preliminary stages in multi-tiered dispute resolution clauses
  • Overview of enforcement practices in Turkey, Middle East and CIS countries

Alexis Mourre, Co-chair of the event and President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration said: “ICC is not only a world leader in dispute resolution services, but is also the preferred arbitral institution. In joining forces with FIDIC, also a recognized international organization, we unify an exceptional network of individuals and impart our extensive experience in construction related disputes and consulting engineer practices.”

On the second day of the conference, the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR will organize a special breakfast to present its new report entitled, “Decisions on costs in international arbitration.” This report is the latest initiative by the commission to assure its users that arbitration continues to be a practical and attractive form of dispute resolution.
