ICC Beijing meetings underscore China’s role in intellectual property arena
ICC strengthened links with Chinese government and business representatives in the area of intellectual property in a series of meetings in Beijing last week.
On 18 September, ICC hosted an international conference alongside the China Council for the Promotion of Trade, the China Chamber of International Commerce, the International Association for the Protection of Intellectual Property, and the World Intellectual Property Organisation.
Ingrid Baele, Chair of ICC’s Commission on Intellectual Property and Head of Operations at Philips Intellectual Property & Standards, said: “In the current climate of international trade tensions, opportunities for businesses and professionals in different countries to exchange information on developments and legal frameworks, are more important than ever to facilitate international relationships, investment and trade.”
Ms Baele added: “Intellectual property is playing an increasingly central role in international trade. By providing a platform for businesses from different sectors around the world to exchange information and develop international best practices in the area of intellectual property, ICC offers companies an invaluable international network and knowledge base to collaborate and invest in cross border innovation.”
The conference was held in conjunction with a meeting of the ICC Commission on Intellectual Property – hosted by ICC China – which met with senior Chinese government officials from intellectual property, customs and environment agencies. The ICC delegation was also received at the Supreme Court of the People’s Republic of China for a discussion with senior judges from the Supreme Court’s Intellectual Property Division.
The discussions highlighted China’s spectacular rise as a major player in the intellectual property arena and its measures to promote the use and development of intellectual property to stimulate innovation and creation for economic and social development.
The meetings also moved to finalise ICC tools on trade secrets protection and valuation of IP assets which will be launched over the next few months.
