ICC and IBA partner to host Dubai mediation conference

The ICC/IBA Mediation Conference will take place on 11 November 2013 and will provide a rare opportunity to hear from savvy professionals why mediation should be considered for settling commercial disputes in the Middle East/North Africa region.

In-house counsel, experienced in using mediation to resolve the commercial disputes of their respective companies, will give insight into the type of cases for which it makes business sense to use mediation as a relatively rapid and low-cost dispute resolution procedure. They will be joined by external counsel with broad experience representing clients in complex international mediations and some of the world’s leading international commercial mediators who will reveal how to most persuasively propose mediation to another party, offer advice to prepare effectively for a mediation and provide tips for selecting an appropriate mediator.

Hosted in conjunction with ICC United Arab Emirates, the ICC International Centre for ADR and the IBA Mediation Committee, the one-day conference will also feature a panel session to present the IBA Investor-State Mediation Rules to which ICC contributed as a member of the drafting group. Led by Ana Joubin Bret, Partner at Joubin-Bret and former Co-Chair
of the Taskforce of the IBA Mediation Committee on Investor-State Mediation, and moderated by Hannah Tümpel, Manager of the ICC International Centre for ADR, the session will outline how the Rules can be used to solve disputes involving states or state entities by mediation.

It is an exciting opportunity for ICC and IBA, two vanguards of mediation, to partner in our bid to raise awareness of the benefits of mediation for business, states and state entities in the MENA region and beyond,” Ms Tümpel said.

Mediation is one of the dispute settlement services offered by ICC through its International Centre. Because mediation is particularly suited to the cultural and legal traditions of MENA countries, ICC has seen a growing demand for its mediation services from countries including the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

On 4 December 2013, ICC will host a launch conference in Paris to unveil its new Mediation Rules which will enter into force on 1 January 2014. ICC will publish an Arabic version of the Rules in December along with several other language versions.
