ICC air transport chief joins Bush administration
Jeffrey Shane, the Washington lawyer who headed the ICC Commission on Air Transport for seven years, has been sworn in as Associate Deputy Secretary in the United States Department of Transportation.
UPS executive Anton van der Lande takes over from Mr Shane as Chair of a newly constituted Air Transport Committee, part of a unified ICC Commission on Transport and Logistics. Mr van der Lande is Vice-President, Public Affairs International at UPS, based in Brussels.
Mr Shane moves into a key post in the Bush Administration as the US airline industry adjusts to the economic consequences of the 11 September terrorist attacks on Washington and New York. He said: “I look forward to helping shape transportation policy in these challenging times.”
The new US government official has practised law since 1993, most recently as a partner with the international law firm of Hogan & Hartson L.L.P. He is no newcomer to government, having served from 1985 to 1989 at the State Department as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Transportation Affairs under President Reagan, and from 1989 to 1993 as Assistant Secretary of Transportation for Policy and International Affairs under the first President Bush.
At ICC, Mr Shane advocated greater liberalization for air transport, lower taxation and modernized legal instruments for the aviation industry.
