Top arbitrators to tutor ICC Masterclass participants

Yves Derains, Chairman of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, will open the training event alongside Alexis Mourre, Vice-President of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, Vice-President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, and Chairman of the Masterclass. Participants will hear from 10 other leading arbitration experts, including: Antonias Dimolitsa, Partner, Antonias Dimolitsa & Associates; Julian Lew QC, Barrister, 20 Essex Street; and Fernando Mantilla-Serrano, Partner, Shearman & Sterling. An intensive three days of presentations and interactive discussions will bring participants up to date on latest developments and best practices in international commercial arbitration and reinforce their knowledge of the ground rules. The course is particularly relevant for lawyers who already have experience as counsel and now want to learn firsthand from the world’s top practitioners, what it is to work as an arbitrator,. “ICC’s Masterclass for Arbitrators is unique in the area of international arbitration training in that it’s both extremely useful – even for the most experienced participants – and accessible. Mr Derains said: “The aim is to improve participants’ understanding of critical theoretical concepts while emphasizing the practical aspects involved in conducting an international arbitration.” Each session will look at an aspect of an arbitrators’ role: from their appointment, and administrative matters at the commencement of proceedings, through to establishing a framework for the arbitration, conducting hearings and drafting enforceable awards. Several demonstrations with a mock arbitral tribunal will help explore questions on relations between arbitrators. A working session will also be dedicated to the drafting of enforceable awards with practical exercises. The training closes with a session on arbitrator immunity. The two past editions of the Masterclass for Arbitrators attracted participants from more than 25 countries.
