The ICC Mediation Competition is the largest international moot exclusively devoted to international commercial mediation. Open to student teams from any business or law school of all disciplines with a strong interest in commercial mediation, the Competition offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the next generation to improve their mediation know-how and open doors to their future professions. Additionally, with its expansive international reach and selection of top talent, the Competition is a “must attend” event for the mediation community, drawing over 500 participants each year. ICC hand picks 66 university teams to take part in the Competition, which takes place from 3-8 February 2017. While the first selection round of student teams has already been determined, the second round is still open for a few more days.
“Every year we receive more outstanding applications so the acceptance process has become quite competitive. But it is exciting to see the diversity in the applicant pool. So far, 20 countries are represented and this year we’re thrilled to have Greece and Romania as new additions to the ever-growing list,” said Sara Debenedetti Project Manager at the ICC Centre for ADR, the body that administers ICC Mediation, Expertise, Dispute Boards and DOCDEX proceedings under the ICC Rules. Of the 66 teams, 20 spaces are reserved for universities that have not previously participated in the Competition.

The selected teams compete in around 150 mock mediation sessions, based on eight scenarios and inspired by real international business disputes. Winners will receive a number of prizes ranging from the latest mediation publications to internships with ICC and partner law firms. However, the most rewarding aspect of the Competition is simply to participate.
Deputy Manager Daphne d’Hennezel said: “The ICC Mediation Competition is an outstanding experience both personally and professionally. It allows young professionals to really test their skills with a number of real-world situations with an international and diverse group, as well as gain insight from highly experienced mediators that will help them progress further into the industry.”

Students are joined by over 120 professional mediators and mediation trainers who act as judges and mediators throughout the Competition. Not only do they evaluate teams and provide constructive feedback, but students are able to see them in action during sessions. These professionals, who come from all over the world, look forward to this annual event each year. For them it is key to promote mediation to a new generation. What is more is that the ICC International Mediation Roundtable, which takes place on the first day of Mediation Week, is an ideal platform to network, discuss best practices and exchange expertise.
Student who would like to sign up for the 12th ICC Mediation Competition should fill out this form and email it directly to the ICC Centre for ADR via email@example.com. Mediators and mediation trainers hoping to participate as judges and mediators will be able to apply until 31 October 2016. Professionals can find more information able the application process here.
