ICC calls on G7 for urgent response to Amazonian fires

  • 23 August 2019

ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO has issued a statement in reaction to forest fires sweeping across the Amazon rainforest.

“The wildfires in the Amazon are a heartbreaking reminder of the urgency to protect the world’s vital resources on which we all depend. The Amazon is a vital biodiversity reserve and crucial greenhouse gas buffer. Deforestation on this current scale is already having devastating consequences, not just in Brazil but in our own homes and communities. Mechanisms for sustainable forest development should be strengthened. When even those who depend on farming the Amazon for their livelihoods are calling for a change of approach, G7 and G20 leaders must take urgent action to pursue long-term solutions that combat the climate crisis while continuing to promote economic development in line with global goals.

ICC stands ready to work with leaders to make rainforest preservation everyone’s business.”
