  • 7 March 2008

The Dubai Chamber of Commerce has released the names in the winners circle for its coveted Mohammad bin al Rachid Maktoum business awards, in front of a packed house of high-level ministers, business executives and diplomatic officials at the Almaza Ballroom in the Monarch Dubai.

The third MRM annual awards, the only local award named after the UAE Prime Minister, are given out by the host, the Dubai Chamber, in recognition of outstanding initiatives in the United Arab Emirates of responsible business performance.

“One of the key mechanisms we looked at is not just how much profit a company generates, but now many jobs are created and whether its social responsibility program is exemplary,” said Prince Sifiso Zulu, ICC World Chambers Federation Vice Chair, one of seven international and local judges including the  UAE Minister of Economy, H.E Sultan Saeed Al Mansorri , Dr. Karl Dreyer  – President of Hamburg Chamber of Commerce , and Dr. Robert Howie of consultancy Balanced Scorecard. This year’s panel of judges was more international in scope, to help raise the global profile of local firms.

A total of 59 multinational and local firms competed for the awards in manufacturing, finance, re-export, construction, and manufacturing in a free trade zone. This year a real estate award was included, reflecting the important contribution property developers are making to the local economy.

The chosen sectors reflect the economic makeup of the UAE’s robust economy, fast becoming a regional hub in these industries. The event was well-attended by the press in television and print, helping elevate the profile of top-performing companies locally, regionally and internationally.

“The Business Performance model prescribed by the MRM Business Award is a unique way to spur business excellence within an organization. It helped us assess our strengths and weaknesses and fine tune our processes to achieve sustainable business results,” said Ismail Akil, Managing Director of World Wide Traders, a past winner in the re-export category.
