The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) – as the institutional representative of more than 45 million companies in over 100 countries, and as Permanent Observer to the UN General Assembly and official UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Focal Point for Business and Industry – supports the call to ambitious and urgent action on biodiversity and recognises the need to progress on all three objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity.
ICC welcomes the recognition of the essential role of business in this process and are committed to work with all stakeholders to help deliver on an ambitious, clear and effective Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (“the Post-2020 Framework”) that is based on specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time-bound (SMART) targets and reflects the latest science.
Many companies are already taking action to integrate biodiversity considerations into their strategies, operations, innovations and investments, but much more needs to be done. The Post-2020 Framework will be essential to guide and accelerate businesses’ action on biodiversity by building upon their experience and expertise, as well as supporting and incentivising even more businesses to embed biodiversity values into their decision-making.
Governments have an important role in creating the enabling environment and effective and coherent policy frameworks that will provide incentives and support action to all business, in particular MSMEs.
