G20
Research Programme 2010
The Foundation’s Board of Trustees and International Advisory Council (see the governance section of ICCRF.ORG) have selected new projects focused on trade and employment to be supported by funds from the Foundation. Work on the following project is already underway and will deliver results during 2010.
– project to evaluate trade and employment policy responses by G20 countries during the Great Recession:
Description:
- Focus on the countries most severely affected by the 2008 recession, namely the nations (members of the G20) which experienced the largest decline in global trade, the greatest worsening of labour markets, and the biggest deterioration of government fiscal positions.
- Describe and critically evaluate the trade and employment policy responses in major economies, with a focus on fiscal costs, targeted labour market groups, and impacts on employment.
Policies to be evaluated include:
- Trade Policies: examine the effects of “Buy country X” provisions, surge in anti-dumping actions,
- Employment Policies: analyze the scope and impact of employment policies used;
- assess whether more successful employment policies have been associated with less frequent resort to discriminatory and protectionist trade measures.
The Chairman of ICC, Victor K. Fung, has described the ICC Research Foundation as the development laboratory for issues of concern to ICC and its National Committees around the world. The chief aim of the Foundation is to support research which provides useful data, analysis and policy options which can be of use to ICC members in addressing issues of common concern, including global trade, trade finance, employment, climate change.The initial results of the research projects supported by the Foundation in 2009 were presented at a CEO Forum in New Delhi in December, 2009. Further news about these initial projects will be the subject of future newsletters and will be posted on the Foundation website.
