Mumbai to host ICC international arbitration training

This will be the first time the city has hosted ‘PIDA training Level 1’, a three-day seminar that brings legal professionals face-to-face with leading arbitration experts from Asia and beyond.

Participants will study a mock case step by step, and work in small groups to gain a first-hand experience and understanding of the ICC Arbitration procedure.

The chair of the training is Laurent Levy, Founding Partner, Levy Kaufmann-Kohler, Switzerland; Council Member, ICC Institute of World Business Law. Dr Levy, who was Vice President of the ICC Court for several years, has been involved in hundreds of arbitrations including and especially ICC arbitrations, both as counsel and arbitrator.

Dr Levy said businesses across Asia were increasingly turning to arbitration as an efficient and effective alternative dispute resolution mechanism. He added: “As the commercial capital of India and its biggest city, Mumbai represents a huge potential market for arbitration. ICC’s PIDA seminar answers a growing demand from legal professionals to be kept up-to-date with the best practices in international commercial arbitration.”

The training will enable participants to:

• Understand the ICC Rules and the practice of international commercial arbitration
• Prepare and draft a Request for Arbitration and an Answer to the Request in small working groups of roughly 10 participants
• Identify the issues and the role of the ICC Court and the Secretariat throughout the arbitral proceedings
• Select and appoint appropriate arbitrators
