ICC mourns passing of Carl Salans
ICC is saddened to learn that Carl Salans, a leading international arbitrator, has passed away at the age of 88.
Mr Salans joined the ICC International Court of Arbitration as a Court member in 2000, was elected Vice-President in 2006, serving three terms until 2015 and briefly served as President in 2008.
Born in Chicago, Mr Salans graduated from Harvard College and earned advanced degrees in international law from Cambridge University and the University of Chicago Law School.
He worked as a Deputy Legal Adviser with the United States Department of State, quickly becoming the Principal Deputy Legal Adviser – the top position within the office. Mr Salans participated in historical discussions, including the neutrality of Laos in 1962, the Pentagon Papers and the Vietnam Peace Talks in Paris.
He then settled in Paris, France, where he helped found Salans, Hertzfeld & Heilbronn in 1978. Quickly finding success, the firm later transitioned to Salans, and today is known as the global law firm Dentons.
Mr Salans held a discreet but powerful presence within the arbitration community. He was known for his natural strength and fairness. He also believed in training and education to help make way for the next generation of lawyers.
The ICC Court extends its sincerest condolences to Mr Salans’ family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
