Ministerial statement welcomed as path to fulfil e-commerce potential
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has welcomed a Ministerial Statement on e-commerce issued today at the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) 11th Ministerial Conference (“MC11”) in Buenos Aires.
The Statement, supported by some 67 governments, establishes a new agenda within the WTO to enable e-commerce in support of global development and small-business growth.
ICC Secretary General John Danilovich said:
“Today’s Statement is a very welcome step forward by governments representing 77% of global trade. We now have a clear path within the WTO to maximise the development potential of e-commerce.
“We firmly believe that with the right global policies in place there is an opportunity to unleash a new era of inclusive trade… one in which all companies—regardless of size, sector or location—can benefit from equal access to the global trading system.
“This important initiative underscores the central importance of the WTO as a forum for trade policy-making – and we welcome the flexible approach taken by governments to address this vital agenda.”
