ICC statement urges action to secure UN plastics treaty

  • 9 August 2025

At the mid-point of the ongoing UN plastics treaty negotiations in Geneva, the International Chamber of Commerce has issued the following statement:

“The business community at large is concerned that the past week of negotiations has yielded limited progress toward a plastics treaty that — from a real economy perspective — is already long overdue.

“Governments must now double down on the many areas where broad alignment already exists – and work pragmatically and with urgency to bridge remaining gaps on key issues. Without an appropriate level of focus, we risk squandering a once-in-a-generation opportunity to tackle plastic pollution in a way that can drive circularity, unlock innovation, strengthen economies and, above all, protect the environment.

“Businesses around the world – large and small – are already taking bold action. An effective agreement that provides clear direction and the framework to accelerate business action is imperative to enable companies to invest at scale in the systems change needed for meaningful change.”

“We urge governments to act in the coming days with the decisiveness and pragmatism that the global challenge of plastics pollution demands. Success is still within reach and can set the course for decades of economic and environmental progress.”

“Business stands ready to support in achieving a successful outcome in Geneva.”
