ICC marks Singapore’s 60th anniversary with call to revitalise global trade
ICC joined business and government leaders in Singapore, celebrating the city-state’s 60th anniversary and reaffirming ICC’s commitment to shaping the future of global trade from Southeast Asia.
Speaking at the IPS-SBF Global City Singapore SG60 and Beyond Conference, ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO reflected on Singapore’s journey and called for urgent efforts to rebuild trust in global trade.
Recognising Singapore as a nation shaped by discipline and resilience, Mr Denton paid tribute to Singapore’s remarkable evolution in a time of rising geopolitical tensions and economic fragmentation.
“Trade and investment remain vital engines of growth,” he said, “but companies are increasingly forced to navigate a fragmented and unpredictable landscape. We must reduce friction and complexity to unlock innovation and prosperity.”

Advancing global digital trade
The SG60 Conference spotlighted emerging challenges and opportunities, from cross-border data flows to AI governance. ICC is working closely with standard-setting bodies to develop global frameworks that ensure innovation is inclusive and sustainable.
“AI, digital trade and climate action are deeply interconnected,” said Mr Denton. “We need coherent, forward-looking international frameworks to make this future work for everyone.”
Based out of Singapore, the ICC Digital Standards Initiative is leading global efforts to harmonise digital trade standards and build interoperable, paperless systems that benefit businesses of all sizes.
“Singapore offers predictability, efficiency and connectivity—three essential ingredients for modern trade. That’s why ICC has chosen to base our Digital Standards Initiative here. It’s a hub not just for business, but for innovation and talent,” said Mr Denton.
Growing hub for dispute resolution
Singapore plays a key role in ICC’s global dispute resolution network. In 2024, Singapore was selected as the seat of arbitration in 28 new ICC cases, ranking the 7th most frequently chosen venue worldwide.
Asia-Pacific now accounts for 25% of ICC’s annual caseload, with Singapore playing a pivotal role in construction, energy and commercial disputes.
ICC training and professional development
Singapore’s role as a centre for trade expertise is supported by the ICC Academy, ICC’s educational arm, building capacity worldwide through globally recognised certification and professional development for individuals and organisations engaged in international trade.
Headquartered in Singapore, the ICC Academy supports ICC’s mission by delivering practical, scalable education that helps trade ecosystems function more smoothly, transparently and efficiently.
