ICC LGBTQIA+ network opens to wider legal community
Marking the beginning of Pride Month in June, ICC Dispute Resolution Services has announced it is opening its LGBTQIA+ network to anyone in the dispute resolution and prevention community.
Since its establishment in 2021, the network has been open to ICC Court members with aims to expand. The network is now open to ICC’s immediate dispute resolution community, comprising members of the ICC International Court of Arbitration, the ICC Young Arbitration and ADR Forum (YAAF), the ICC Commission on Arbitration and ADR and the ICC Institute of World Business Law, as well as anyone in the dispute resolution and prevention community.
Claudia Salomon, ICC Court President said:
“Diversity, broadly defined to include the LGBTQIA+ community, is key to the legitimacy of international arbitration. It is essential that everyone knows they belong, and the dispute prevention and resolution community reflects the global business community.”
A launch event will take place on 15 June 2023 to discuss the benefits of LGBTQIA+ inclusion in dispute prevention and resolution and why there is a need for this network. The expansion of the LGBTQIA+ network delivers on a pledge set out in the ICC Centenary Declaration on Dispute Prevention and Resolution, launched earlier this year, to “build on ground-breaking work on diversity, equity and inclusion in all aspects of dispute prevention and resolution, including all stakeholders in the process”.
The ICC LGBTQIA+ network will work in cooperation with ICC World Business Pride, a staff-led initiative for and about the LGBTQIA+ community and allies, to support LGBTQIA+ entrepreneurs and dispute resolution practitioners for capacity-building and information-sharing activities. It aims to support personal development, enable best practice sharing, build understanding, ensure accountability, and create a safe and inclusive environment for those in the LGBTQIA+ community.
In 2021, ICC received the Global Arbitration Review Award for Equal Representation in Arbitration Pledge for the launch of an ICC Task Force on Disability Inclusion and International Arbitration and for establishing the LGBTQIA+ network.
