ICC Executive Board Member and Regional Coordinator for the Asia-Pacific region, Shinta Kamdani, has been appointed Chair of the B20, the platform for the international business community to support the work of the G20 process, organised in 2022 under the stewardship of host country Indonesia.

This is the first time a developing nation from the Asia region has taken the G20 mantle and Ms Kamdani’s appointment marks the time a woman leader with a background linked to a developing Asian economy has taken on the role of B20 Chair.

ICC First-Vice Chair Maria Fernanda Garza, ICC World Chambers Federation Executive Committee Member and G20 Representative Yassin al-Suroor and ICC Executive Board Member Xu Niansha have also been appointed to the B20 high level International Advocacy Caucus, along with former ICC Executive Board Member and ICC Turkey Chair Rifat Hisarciklioglu.

ICC has become the only global organisation network partner to undertake a role in all seven taskforces of the B20 comprising Trade and Investment; Energy, Sustainability and Climate; Digitalisation; Finance and Infrastructure; Future of Work; Integrity and Compliance; and Women in Business.

A two-day Indonesia B20 inception meeting, featuring welcome remarks from Ms Kamdani, will take place on 27-28 January. ICC Secretary General John W.H. Denton AO, who has recently been re-appointed for a second year as Co-Chair of the B20 Finance and Infrastructure Taskforce, will also take part in the inception meeting as host of a fireside chat with Mari Pangestu, Managing Director of Development Policy and Partnerships at the World Bank to discuss pandemic recovery and post-pandemic growth through enhanced global governance and engagement.

Mr Denton said: “In line with the work ICC undertakes to grow the economy, revive global trade and advance sustainability, we look forward to working hand in hand with the B20, in our role as the voice of the real economy, to drive successful outcomes of the G20 Indonesia Presidency. This includes by delivering actionable policy recommendations, for governments and international organisations, that work for everyone, everywhere.”
