Sold-out training perfects international contract clause negotiating skills
The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) Institute of World Business Law’s annual Advanced Training on International Contracts took place last month in Paris, gathering over 40 legal practitioners from 23 countries involved in international trade and dispute resolution.
Kristine Karsten, Partner at VistaLaw, France, Council Member of the ICC Institute of World Business Law, and Chair of the training, said: “Every year, this hands-on seminar responds to the need for further training on international contracts. Participants were able to perfect the skills necessary to negotiate specific contract clauses while exchanging with international colleagues. Trainees also got to learn about the different perspectives of in-house and outside counsel, arbitrators and other business professionals on the topics at hand,” she added.
A panel of 10 experts working in the field of contract law covered the range of techniques for drafting key contract clauses and the appropriate approach to resolving disputes that arise in international transactions. Organized in small groups of 10, participants took part in intensive working sessions, during which they discussed and redrafted a simulated international contract.
A three-hour brainstorming session opened the floor for questions on specific issues trainees face in their daily work, and gave participants an opportunity to get legal advice from experts and colleagues.
The multicultural environment in which the event took place revealed the importance of taking into consideration the cultural and legal differences which arise in an international context.

Sarah Bremner, Legal Counsel, Subsea 7, France, also shared her experience on attending the event: “In addition to acquiring fundamental knowledge on how to manage cross-border contracts, the training was an occasion to network and meet legal professionals from all over the world. I also enjoyed the social programme that complemented the four-day training. This was a great way to meet other participants in an informal context.”
The training took place from 17-20 November at the ICC Hearing Centre in central Paris. The next advanced international contracts training will be held from 28 September-1 October 2015 in Paris.
