What you need to know if you wish to apply for an internship
Question: Does the International Court of Arbitration have an internship programme?
Answer: The
Secretariat of the International Court of Arbitration of the ICC has set up a
program of two months internships and in any case not exceeding three months.
Question: Who is eligible for the internships?
Answer: Law students who are not yet engaged in
professional legal practice. Applicants are required to have studied
international arbitration. Prior internship in the arbitration department of
law firms is a plus.
Question: What languages do I need to be able to speak?
Answer: The working languages of the Court are
English and French, but potential interns would need to have a very good
command of English (certificate from a language school is requested for a
non-native speaker). Further linguistic ability is a plus.
Question: What kind of work will I be doing?
Answer: Interns attend the sessions of the Court and
participate in the work of the Secretariat. They are also expected, should the
need arise, to contribute to a particular research project related to
arbitration.
Question: Can you provide any help in finding accommodation in Paris for my internship?
Answer: Interns are required to handle their own travel
/ accommodation arrangements for their stay in Paris.
Question: Is the internship remunerated?
Answer: No
Question: Can I apply at anytime during the year?
Answer: We recommend that you apply in writing during
the month of June (application to reach us before 30 June) to be considered for
an internship from January – June (first semester) of the following year. Or,
applications can be made in November (application to reach us before 30
November) to be considered for an internship from July to December (second
semester) of the following year.
Question: What do I need to send with my application?
Answer: Candidates are requested to submit with their
request a detailed resume, two recommendation letters (from a professor or
employer) as well as a summary of their motivations and their experience in
relation with international arbitration. Please note that there is a legal
requirement under French law (French Act n° 2006-396 of 31 March 2006): interns
at the ICC must be simultaneously registered students at a University or
School. Documentation from the intern’s University or School will be requested
upon acceptance of the internship.
